I am running a web server on a Fedora 14 machine (also using amahi for those who know it) and have recently installed gallery3. I have had great success with it before, and love the program, but I've run into a snag on this setup. I want the pictures in my gallery (/var) to reside on the Drobo I have connected through firewire like the rest of my media (music, movies, etc.) Changing the location hasn't been a problem before, as I just used symlinks. However, the Drobo does not support symlinks. I tried the help posted here, but when I change the VARPATH in the installer/index.php file, I get the PHOTO STORAGE CAN'T CREATE A PLACE FOR YOUR PHOTOS and am told to do a mkdir var and chmod 777. I know the Drobo is accessible, as my music server can get to it no problem. I also tried changing the VARPATH post install like it said, but when I do that, it redirects me to the "click here to get started with gallery3 page", and I can't get passed that. Any advice?

I didn't look through your post in detail (becuase it's Fedora, external, etc, etc), but it being "accessible" and it being "writable" are not the same. The error message you're seeing suggests that Gallery does not have permissions to write to the drive. If you create the directory and make permissions 777, it should be fine. (But you might want to find a better way, as 777 permissions are generally not a good idea unless you absolutely, absolutely have to.)
