I like uploadify, but it doesn't let me drag & drop like upload applet does or resize the picture before uploading it.

I see the admin template in the module.
I don't like java applets, they have limited memory access. So I don't use it myself.
You can purchase the HTML5 version of uploadify for just $5 and it is almost an even swap for the flash version in the uploadify template.(Or maybe someday I'll get around to updating it)
The File API version supports D-n-D, but not auto resizing. But gallery does without the java applet Edit Album -> Album tab -> Define picture size limit
