I just uploaded some new images and usually when I click on an image I get a lightbox with the image in it. This time I get an icon that looks like a broken window. However for my old images everything is working fine. I can see thumbnails ok so pretty sure the images have been formed and uploaded in the same way as usual. I've checked the album settings and seem identical between albums that work and ones that don't. Any suggestions appraciated.

The thumbnails might be showing fine but when you click through to the photo page to view the image, same image the lightbox pulls, you get a broken image icon.
For example, the first image shows a ringed seal correctly on the knackered album but the photo page here, http://www.wildblueimages.co.uk/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=4687, has a broken image.
In other words, the lightbox is working just fine. I.E., it is showing exactly what it is supposed to show ... the main image from the photo page as exists.

Um so what's the problem as don't understand what the broken image icon means? If the image hadn't uploaded correctly wouldn't the thumbnails be broken to?

Maybe it is just that the resized versions are not getting built.
Try to go into "Edit Album" and make sure the dimensions for the resizes are actually defined.
I had a situation a while back where the dimensions where missing from some albums for some reason.
You could also try rebuilding thumbs and resizes in the affected album(s).

Well resizes seem all present to rebuilt everything I could find and clicked all the "use in subalbum" links to no avail. Deleted the whole album and tried and agian. Even put one of the new images in an old album which works, but the new image doesn't. So it doesn't actually seem to be dependent on the album settings. It seems to be just the building of the resize for new images. I resized all the images in the parent albums and the old images still work as was half expecting them to all stop working. Really wierd, but of course means my website is now pretty well knackered!

How wierd. I just changed the resize from 500x500 to 600x600 and suddenly it all works fine!!!!
