Image Size Problem

Am using Gallery version 1.5.10 on host using Linux operating system, php 5.3.15 and Apache version 2.2.22.

Person adding images did not bother to resize images and uploaded them as they came from digital camera. For example all files in album01 listed in the album directory total 200MB. Each image within album01 is made up of three images named image001.jpg, image001sized.jpg and image001thumb.jpg.

Can I just download image001.jpg to my computer, resize to a much smaller size and then FTP it back to where it was (album01) without messing everything up.

Is there an easy way to do this or do I just have to delete the album, make the images the appropriate size and then upload them back.

I also see that there a lot of files (ie photos.dat.1, photos.dat.108, etc) that are 0 in size (blanks). Can I delete these files.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

You should be able to just download them -> resize -> upload
But why are you still using G1?
G2 had a great feature to impose size restrictions:

Define picture size limit
Maximum dimensions of full sized images

Maximum file size of full sized images in kilobytes

Keep original image?
Check here to apply size limits to the pictures in this album and all subalbums

Checking this option will rebuild pictures according to appropriate limits

Use these size limits in all subalbums

Checking this option will set same picture size limits in all subalbums

And I believe G3 has a module to do similar.
