From my system:
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
Release: 12.04
Codename: precise
I ended up using the Serveradd Module
I was able to load Gallery 3 and the serveradd module (very straightforward).
I was not successful in adding the path /media/external_USBdrive so I had to copy all my images to /home/chiques/Pictures/chiques_pics. I tried to chmod 777 and chown www in /media/external_USBdrive but Gallery was still unable to use as a valid path.
I have about 18K images which I plan on importing to Gallery 3 and it appears it will take about 1 1/2 days.
Thanks for your help.

I'm following the instructions on Modules:folder_sync but they make no sense with the version I have installed (1.5.10).
Is there another way of importing all of my current images to Gallery?
I had the same problem chiques, just updated to gallery 3 like you have to see if that works instead. I'm new to all this so jsut learning as I go along really.

You posted in the G1 section yet talk about a G3 module.
If you are using G3 then I suggest: http://codex.galleryproject.org/Gallery3:Modules:serveradd if the items are on the same server.
