This took me a heck of a lot longer to figure this out that I am willing to admit . I thought for a while that my gallery installation had blown up again. ANd I still might not be right in my guesses!
I installed and activated "permissions dialog usability". I could not figure out how to limit all other users to only leaving comments. This module seems go have worked fine but now I am not so sure.
Because had no idea how to restrict all other users to only leaving comments I created a new group that I called Core. So I moved my admin account to Core and gave that group and users all permissions and set the other groups' permissions to where they did not have access to create/admin a gallery. And I think that this is where I may have created a conflict.
Here is basically what I created:
everybody - view - view full size
registered users - view - view full size
Core - view - view full size - edit - add
Everybody contains Guest and me
Registered users contains only me
Core contains only me
Is this creating a conflict? And if it is, how do I resolve it? I already know I can get and edit the database manually if needed. I know enough to get in and also know enough as to when to get out
It is only since creating the Core group and setting permissions that I have had problems with the gallery. It is at its worst when it wants me to reauthorize. I am pretty well guaranteed an error 500.

By the way, my logic for the groups and permissions the illustrated above was that I figured with my account belonging to the the Core group with all permissions it would override lower permission settings. Made sense at the time since it is how I would program things. In retrospect the Core group may not have precedence when deciding how to assign permissions.

As a side note, perhaps related, there is no admin group listed in the groups table in the database ... and I certainly did not delete it.

All the "permissions dialog usability" module does is move the x and y axis of the table using JavaScript.

Then I may need to look for another solution. If by your answer I can assume that I don't have a permission issue, then I am at a total loss. Gallery3 is crashing again. And there is nothing in the logs.

Problem solved. I am going with another package. Gallery3 may be wonderful, but I never had the chance to experience it. I have now had two installations blow up through no fault of my own as far as I can tell. The first problem, I was told what th actual problem was, but not the steps to fix it. I had to do that through my own research. And I fixed it. And if the answer in response the question, "Do I have a permissions conflict" is to tell me that the module displays things differently then I have to conclude that Both Gallery3 the support offered here is geared more towards the programmer than it is a non-programmer end user.
It's a shame, really. I have spent 50 or 60 hours over the past two weeks trying to get Gallery3 to run. I tried. I really tried. It actually makes me sad to have to go with another solution. I just can't afford any more time to dedicate to get things running when I need to spend the time elsewhere.
I won't openly criticize Gallery3. If asked, I will simply say that it was originally my first choice, but due to circumstances I had to go with something else.
Gallery3 really does look like a good package.
