Upgrade from 2.2.6 to 2.3.2 causing "redirecting ... that will never complete."

Gallery version (not just "2"): 2.3.2 (was 2.2.6)
PHP version: 5.4.19

Database (e.g. MySql 5.0.32): 5.1.71
Activated toolkits (e.g. NetPbm, GD): as far as I know, just the default one's that come with gallary2 - it's been a while since I've done any deep maintenance (maybe 3 years?)
Operating system (e.g. Linux): Linux icpu2670 2.6.28.8-20120713a-iscsi-ntacker-3ware-sec8-fmon-igb-dif2-grsec #1 SMP Fri Jul 13 13:37:07 CEST 2012 i686 GNU/Linux
Browser (e.g. Firefox 2.0): Firefox 21.0 and IE8

So I just upgraded to 2.3.2 (after test driving 3.0.9 and having issues with it - probably due to the hosting site I'm on), using these instructions (couldn't find ones specific to 2.3.2):

I've search and found similar issues to mine and tried all kinds of things that were suggested

But I still can't get the gallery to display.

I've tried renaming .htaccess, using phpmyadmin to disable modules, using the
direct access link to long in:

Using this URL was the only way I was actually able to get it to run the upgrade.php, but otherwise it won't display anything but the error message from Firefox saying it wants to re-direct too many times.

I've also tried tweaking the last lines in config.php:

As of now I've put everything back to the way it was (short of moving the original files back in place and restoring the database - which is want I'll do next if I don't a response).

P.S. is there a way to disable database caching, it creates like 160K+ files that I'd rather not have hanging around (I'm not horribly concerned with performance as much as I am about filling up my limit on inodes).
