No thumbnails only original picture displays

I have had Gallery installed and operational for over a year with at least one reinstall and have never had any problems. When I had to reinstall this time, the install seems fine, but all thumbnails are broken. The only thing I can view is the original picture fullsize. I am using server add to add albums and the var location is not default. But from what I can tell, these are not causing any problems. Any suggestions?

The var location is on a separate hard drive where my photos are stored. I can add albums and photos to gallery, but no thumbnails are created. It is stored in the same location as it was on my last install. The folders are world read/write so there should be no permission problems.

Nope. I moved the whole gallery3 directory back to the default location, but there are still no thumbnails. I suppose I may have to try a clean wipe and install.
