Unable to process photos

Hi there, When I create an album and try to add images it gives me an error saying, "Unable to process photos". Any thoughts on what is happening? I'm on the 3.03 version of Gallery, which came with my web server plan. I believe I updated to the latest when prompted in the Admin area. I tried it on two different themes and it was the same result. I didn't see anything in the existing forum posts so I'm sorry if this is already answered elsewhere. Screen shot attached.

It could be a bug that has been fixed in the 5+ updates we have provided and recommended that people upgrade to.
Please upgrade to 3.0.9 to see if it fixes your issue.
Return back if the issue still persists and we can continue.
I doubt it would be a theme issue as that does not involve image processing it just controls color and layout.

I have 3.0.9 installed and i am getting this error on a number of images I am uploading. Rest of the images upload ok. Failed iamges are fine opening, editing and loading in other imaging apps so there is no format issue or anything.
However I am unable to get a meaningful error message. Can someone please explain where are the details for Unable to process photos message? I look at var/logs/ but there is bunch of php files that has a content of <?php defined('SYSPATH') or die('No direct script access.'); ?>
I also checked the code, which looks like it is a http 500 error but again there is no detail in apache logs or gallery logs. So what to look for?
