importing database from another server?

My client asked me to move his gallery from the current host (which he is not in control of) to a host that he controls access to completely. If I back up the DB, can I import it using PHPMyAdmin or is there a better way?
We have all of the photos, but will lose the discriptions, and there are over 1000 of them....
any smarty ideas?
