Thank you, thank you, I am happy to say that I am having the same problem as you! I have been tearing my hairs out and was wondering if there was a fault with the web host!
I am using Gallery v1.4.1-RC3 and from what I can see, RC4 is giving the same problems too!
So, I'm stuck with broken Gallery.
Anyone looking into this problem?

tsutton,
If you can upload small files, but not big ones, then it's going to be FAQ Gallery:c.6 as above.

I'm not using Apache 2.0, just a standard Apache 1.3.27 because it's stable.
So, it's a bug with Gallery and nothing to do with my web host, yeah?
Thanks for the reply.

So that means the 2nd paragraph does not apply to you. Try reading the first paragraph, and clicking the link and reading the email.
Then come back with further questions.

tsutton, no it isn't. The fact that you can upload small files indicate that Gallery is working. It's your php/apache implementation that limits the size of uploads.

Small and large file - I can't upload at all. Via the web and via Gallery Remote.
Smallest was 15KB and largest was 800KB
Even trying to move a photo from one subfolder to another folder. All I get was this message:
Resizing/compressing original image
No resizing required
and then it just hangs.
Are you suggesting that I should try the steps with editing the php.ini file? I fail to see how it will help because 1) The e-mail mentioned in FAQ Gallery:c.6 was dated in 2002-07-05 and it does not apply to Gallery 1.3 because it only came out recently, 2) Earlier version of Gallery works fine up until RC3 where it started to break. If you look at many other posting, you will see that others are having lots of problems with RC3 and RC4.
Something changed with Gallery. And no one is saying anything about it.
Thanks,

Tony,
The other thread was about someone who could upload with GR and not his browser, so it's not unnatural to assume your problems are the same.
As they are not, this is a new thread.
What access can you provide to your server? We need at least a test account to upload to your server and if possible ssh/ftp access.
Let me know.

I'll PM you with Gallery logon.

I too am using Gallery 1.4.1 RC3 (upgraded from 1.4 pl1) and am running into the same problems as Mr. Sutton (Resizing/compressing original image No resizing required and then a hang when doing web upload; when using Gallery Remote I get Upload Error: Upload Failed: 'Unable to make thunbnail (0)'.)
Just in case it might help, here is what I have done since upgrading to 1.4.1 RC3:
I have created one album and successfully added about 10 photos to it - no problems encountered.
Today, however, I created a new album, but decided I did not want it and deleted it. It did not have any pictures in it. The album delete appeared to work okay.
I then tried to add a picture to the existing album I created after the upgrade, and that is when I started getting the errors. I did not try to add photos to any of my other albums for fear of corrupting them.
Using my FTP client and SSH, I see that the permissions and ownership for the album I created with 1.4.1 RC3 are different from my other albums. Of course, I don't know if they were that way when I created the album or if they were changed when I tried to add the photo today.
I am running (actually my hosting service is running):
Gallery version: 1.4.1-RC3
Apache version: 1.3.29
PHP version: 4.3.4
Graphics Toolkit: ImageMagik
Operating system: Linux - Kernel Version 2.4.20-20.7
Also, my gallery is running as a postnuke module, although typically I access my gallery in standalone mode using a subdomain that points to the postnuke module - this is how I do the web uploads.
If anyone wants to explore further, PM me and I will create a user for you in my gallery and/or give you shell access to my site.
Thanks!

Thanks, pnorrod for posting. We need to make sure that Gallery team are aware about this bug.

Hi, i have the same problem with you, maybe.
in fact, when i upload files using "add photos" directive, all work fine; but if i use "add photo" directive, problem appears. just as that metioned above, after messege "No resizing required", it hangs. i put my gallery under debug mode, and then seems all work fine until the messege "No resizing required" appears. (it says status=0 & expected =0)
and, since all files uploaded before are JPEG format, i try some other files later. i upload Gif file using "add photo" directive, it seems no any problem. it works fast & well.
And one more information is, before i try gallery1.41, i use gallery1.4 pl2.
there's no problem found with it, and it works well & fast. So im confused.
That's my situation. thanks a lot if there's any help.
my php version: 4.3.4
apache : 1.3.28
mysql: 3.23.58
os: winxp+sp1

This seems to be a widespread problem with Apache 2 and Gallery 1.4.1. I had a working Gallery then upgraded to Redhat 9 with Apache 2 and upgraded with Gallery 1.4.1 and had the problems...
Help too!

Same problem I had see "uploading problems too" thread, this is how I fixed it:
installed latest imagemagick.
removed old imagemagick.
pointed gallery configuration to new location of imagemagick, as it was different to the old location of imagemagick.
uploads like a dream now.

I have the same problem as people above describe.
And yes I have read the FAQ as well as all the postings in these Fora (forums) that could be valid.
Use Apache 2.0.48 on W2K, PHP 4.3.4, Gallery 1.4.1.
Tried NetPBM1.1 (the one on the Gallery D/L page
NetpPBM10.15 and 10.6
tried various versions of CygWin latest being 1.5.1,
in- and excluded different versions of jpegtran
Also tried latest version of ImageMagick 5.5.7,
and also tried the CygWin one.
ImageMagick is working correctly BTW (convert works)
Also tried adding all kinds of paths to the system environment.
Also switched on debug mode.
Which didn't give anymore info.
I have tried it for several days now,
And I give up.
Gallery is just not working for me.
Hope any of you are having more luck.

the problem seemed to be jhead. when I removed jhead from the configuration window. uploads work.
Still figuring out what is the problem with jhead.

I have tried the elements in the FAQ, making appropriate adjustments, but get my upload crashing out at around 4MBs and then I get the error:
---------------
Add Photo
Error: The file "" does not exist
Click the Browse button to locate a photo to upload.
(Supported file types: jpg, jpeg, gif, png, avi, mpg, mpeg, wmv, mov, swf, mp4)
-----------
I am running Apache 2.x on WinXP w/imagemagick, and am able to upload pics with no problem. It is a movie post of greater than 2mbs (I was able to do a movie with 2mbs) where it hiccups.
I have changed the PHP.ini file (point 1) and the add_photo.php (point 2), and the .htaccess file in the ~/gallery directory is empty (besides some comments), but still no luck.
Any other ideas?
