"Broken" images and Can't Find NetPBM

After a lot of fuss I finally got my gallery sort of working, but currently I have the following problems, and I'm not sure if they're related or not. I originally stuck with Imagemagick simply because it was quicker to go with that, as I found it was already installed when I tried to configure my gallery. However, everything seems to work fine except that upon uploading a jpeg image, it acts as though it's working, but all I get is the empty box with a red X where the image should be.

Furthermore, I decided trying to install NetPBM to see if that would help at all. But the configuration wizard can't find it. I tried finding the exact path using the test.php file in the netpbm directory as I read on the FAQs, but the wizard still can't find it. Now, I got the following error messages in the diagnostic thing for each of the NetPBM binaries: "Expected status: 0, but actually received status 126." I don't really know what this means. Furthermore, if I get NetPBM to work, will this possibly solve my first problem? Thanks for all the help. I hope I've included all of the necessary information.
