ok...to begin with:
I've got:
Apache 1.3.28
PHP 4.3.3
MySQL 3.23.57
Windows XP Pro
Gallery 1.4.1
netpbm-10.6-1-bin.exe (also tried with ImageMagick, still problems)
+ jhead.exe
------------------------------------------
Installation and cofiguration works perfect and I can also access the gallery through the web, but the problem occures when I try to upload or add an image to a new album.
I click on add photos, choose a single picture on my computer, fill the boxes and click on Upload. Then a new smaller blank popup window appears and everything stops. On the other window appears this text:
- Adding my_picture.jpg
Resizing/compressing original image
No resizing required
First I thought it should be so, but after a while I closed the two popup windows and returned to the gallery, refreshed and the gallery wouldn't open. Only after I open the windows task manager and close some applications (cmd.exe, jpegtopnm.exe,...) the galley works, but of course the picture wasn't added. Album is still empty.
So I go on my www directory of apache to check if there was some action. In the gallery/albums/album01/ is the picture I uploaded, but the thumbnail only shows the text "no picture...".
What did I do wrong? Please help. I searched the web, I couldn't find a answer.
Thanks
Mario

Go through FAQ Gallery:c.2 and post the debug info here.

I've got exactly the same problem - only difference is mysql is not installed.
When debugging - no info is generated - the browser just 'hangs'. I've installed on two different computers - one set up as localhost and one set up as intranet server. It works on the localhost, but not the intranet server. Both are running eactly the same setups (win xp etc etc).

khva1380, i gather you'll do the same then ?
Oh, and one more thing, there has been some issues with apache/php on Windows XP without SP1. Do you guys have SP1 installed?

Hi h0bbel,
I've tried the same and don't get any information generated. (I am in debug mode as the login window doesn't close down and reports debug to be active).
Ok - I've got windows xp home with SP1 installed on both machines. I just edited my first post with some extra info in the light of yours!
Cheers

P.S.

I've exactly the same problem!!!
But if upload a whole directory, it works perfect!. My problem is only when uploading just 1 photo.
Another thing... I can't see the debug message, my browser hangs before that.
BTW, I tested NetPBM and imagemagick, last versions both, and the problem continues.

romario, your upload seems to work? No errors in the debug info. URL?
Juspe, yours is timing out. Please search the forums for that error, you should find a lot of threads dealing with the same error message.

I've got exactly the same as Romario. Except that i'm using Windows 2003 instead of WinXP.

Hi,
does anyone has a workaround for this issue. I've also tried using the Windows Publishing agent, this gives the same result, everting hangs.

Ok.
I've got a suggestion for you guys. We are working on a change to the way executable files are called from Gallery.
Could you try out what is mentioned in http://gallery.menalto.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=10915&highlight= and see if that helps you out?
I've tried the suggestion to change the way executable are called. Didn't change anything for me. Gallery upload screen seems frozen and an instance of cmd.exe is still loaded ?!
I've no knowledge of PHP so maybe i'm not a good victim. Can someone else please try.
Patrick

petjez, then i guess your problem is unrelated to how cmd.exe is called.
Are you absolutely sure you followed the documentation @ http://gallery.sf.net/docs.php including the notes specifically relating to Windows 2003?

I've solved my upload problem by setting a temp directorie in php.ini.
Default setting is to use the system temp folder. I simply added an extra temp folder: c:\php\temp and added this in php.ini

cyaconi, any way we can access your server?
Please everyone, keep this question clear.
I was using 1.4 w/o any problem, once upgrade to 1.4.1 I got this problem.
Anything related to .htaccess file? I doubt about this. Using this file in Windows platform is kind of problem.
My tmp directory is running fine with updates.
When I checking the check_netpbm.php , it hangs.
Please do get back to the question owner.
My system still open, please look at my previous post for pw.
Thanks + Best regards,

s-fu, sorry about this. This has to be the most confusing thread ever.
It's pretty weird that it worked before the upgrade, especially since you use NetPBM. There has been som changes in the way we call Imagemagick, but not NetPBM.
Is there any way I can access your server directly, via remote desktop or something similar? PM me details if you'd like.

I think I'm having the same problem as these other folks. Here's the info I've gathered so far.
The problem pops up when I try to upload my first picture. After I browse to my jpeg and click upload, it times out. If I click upload again, I get "Page cannot be displayed". Up on the server, my Apache error_log file shows:
"[notice] child pid 7271 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)"
When I go into config wizard, then detailed checking of the NetPBM modules, I get 12 lines just like:
"Checking: /www/netpbm/bin/giftopnm Expected status: 0, but actually received status 127."
Oh, yeah - when I turn on debugging, where am I supposed to find the additional output? Do I need to lower the threshold on my apache error log?
My environment:
URL: http://www.briankd.com/nuke/modules/gallery/
Gallery version: 1.4.1
PHP version: 4.3.3
Apache version: 2.0.47
Opsys version: Linux 2.4.22 on i686 architecture.
Browser version: MSIE 6.0.28.1106
NetPBM version: 10.18.4 (located in the "jail")
Could I mention something your last remark brings to mind? You stated that you've changed the way you call imagemagick, but not how you call NetPBM. I've heard, and made myself, similar remarks about other programming problems. Sometimes that means that tweaks were made to a module that was thought to be specific to the updated function, but is actually common to it and the now failing function. Please forgive my frankness, but I've been here myself before.
I can provide access to my server and instance of Gallery, if you desire it.
Thank You -- Brian

BrianKDav, a segfault most of the time mean that you are using the wrong binaries. Are you absolutely sure that you uploaded the linux binaries? Do they work in standalone mode, from the command line?
As for the changes made to imagemagick, YES i am sure that only IM is affected. The command line used to call convert has changed, the parameter order is the only thing changed.
A little progress. In answer to your question about the NetPBM binaries, I had downloaded the source and done the configure, make, make package, installnetpbm. I finally got green boxes in check_netpbm.php after making shared libraries, and installing to the same folders as Apache (www/bin, include, lib, & man). I have a record of all my replies to that process if you want them. Jhead and Jpegtran are in the jail (www/bin etc.). I'm still getting a seg fault.
What's next?

BrianKDav, and do they execute when run from the command line?
Sorry, yes - command line worked. Here's an example:
# giftopnm --version
giftopnm: Using libpbm from Netpbm Version: Netpbm 9.24
giftopnm: Compiled Wed Feb 19 11:26:33 EST 2003 by user "root"
giftopnm: BSD defined
giftopnm: RGB_ENV='RGBDEF'
giftopnm: RGBENV= 'RGBDEF' (env vbl is unset)
Wierd thing is, if I invoked MAKE to create this, why is the compile date in February?
I'm now trying to figure out where it actually breaks, but I don't know enough about PHP to be effective. What I'd like to do is, starting with add_photo.php, insert code in the module that writes a log line to a specific file. Can you provide a sample of PHP code to add a line with a timestamp to a trace file?

I had returned to the 1.4-pl2 which still have the upload problem, I will do a complete restore to test it further. The screen hanging after the image is uploaded and sever start processing the image.
What I could remember after my last upload and before the upgrade, is that I had upgraded my J2EE client to a newer version.
java -version
java version "1.4.2_02"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_02-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_02-b03, mixed mode)
I guess this could be the problem. I might uninstall and give a fly.
Please give me you PM address, so I can write to you.
Cheers,
Happy New Year!

I have a similar problem running PHP 4.3.4 and the latest Apache 2.0.48, I have tried imagemagick and netpbm. Both successfully convert the images to thumbnails and save them, but the window that normally shows the uploading animation will fail to display after the server says everything is fine. CMD.exe windows get stuck open, and I have to restart apache, the previous copy of which then later crashes. GalleryRemote appears to work fine every time, while uploading thru the webpage may work once if I am lucky, but usually fails the first time. Here's my debug:

ericp, Is this in Windows 2000 or Windows XP ? Have you tried the changes mentioned in http://gallery.menalto.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=10915&highlight= ?

This is Win2K w/Apache.. I keep thinking winxp with SP1 since that's what I have on my desktop, doh. What leads you to believe the problem may be in calling cmd.exe? The conversion always takes place and leaves me with my large image and thumbnails in the albums dir, but it's like it can't finish the process.

h0bbel, everybody... apparently I found a "bug ?" pls. test this with your configs (I had the same problem related here and now it's solved).
After this, if you have Albums you can rename the Album directory to other and create the Album dir again. Then you need to re-run the "Gallery Configuration Wizard" to create the Admin usr & psw.
1) Create a a Gallery (if you haven't one yet).
2) Create an Album (if you haven't one yet). NOW PAY ATTENTION
3) Go into this Album
4) Goto the Properties (into the drop-down near the slideshow link)
5) Search for the "Maximum dimensions of intermediate sized images" field, by default is with 640.
6) Change the value to OFF (then you can change to 640 again).
7) Apply the changes
8) Close the window
9) Upload the image that you want.
10) Now you can return to the properties and change that field -see 5)- to 640 or any other value.
11) Now the Gallery works fine.
I spent 2 days until see this "solution/bug".
Remember that when Apache hangs you must stop/restart the service...
I'm very Newbie with PHP so I can't figure out where the problem is.
My config:
Win XP Pro (SP1) - English version
Apache 2.0.48
PHP 4.3.4
Gallery 1.4.1
Gallery is Using:
NetPBM
ppmtojpeg
Highlight = 100
Jhead EXIF Parser "YES"
(Advanced) Cache EXIF data "YES"
Jpegtran "YES" (jpegtran.exe and jpeg-62.dll are into the Gallery root - C:\Site\gallery - )

Okay, h0bbel, I solved the problem with the segment fault :D . I'm using Mod_Security (http://www.modsecurity.org/) to protect my server, and that seemed to be causing the problem. Once I turned the rules off for the gallery folders (directive "SecFilterInheritance Off"), the problem went away.
Now to move on to the other problems, like "magic number" issues and JPEG data segment errors... :-? .
Thank you for your suggestions!!

I too am experiencing this hanging problem when uploading images on Gallery 1.4.1. I think S-FU might be on to something regarding the installation of Java. About a month ago, I upgraded to RC4 and lost the ability to upload images in the process. Two weeks ago, I did a Windows partition format and reinstalled XP Pro SP1a + all critical updates. I chose to install XAMP (an Apache 2.0.48 + PHP 4.3.4 + Perl, SQL, SSL, etc.). Gallery 1.4.1 worked flawlessly with ImageMagick 5.5.7 and none of the optional executables (jhead, unzip, etc). I was very satisfied with gallery finally working. Whatever caused the hanging problem was fixed with the format.
A few days ago, I completely logged out of Windows after being logged in for about 10 days (I did not restart the system, simply logged out). During the log on process, a Java dialog box appeared and asked if I would like to upgrade to JRE 1.4.2_03 from 1.4.2_02. It is worth mentioning that JRE had been installed weeks before via an XSI module in Firebird 0.7. After the installation was complete, it prompted me for a reboot. I reluctantly agreed and restarted the machine. I did not notice any change in the system until last night when I tried to upload a single image to my gallery. No matter what browser I use, it hangs on the resizing image message and the nice transfer graphic fails to display. Other than Java, the only applications I installed between Gallery working and crashing are ffdshow and Serv-U ftp server, both of which I have had running while a fully working version of gallery was installed.
I have a hunch this problem is somehow caused by Java, but I have no clue as to why. Debug mode is activated on my machine and there is no change in display when uploading images from when it is off. I also get the renegade cmd.exe processes running as "System" on my machine after attempted upload and have to restart the Apache service. The thumbnails do get generated and everything appears as though it should work. I saw another post saying that replacing the ImageTools.jar file from an older version of Gallery fixed a thumbnail resize problem. I tried this, but it did not fix the problem. In attempting to solve the problem, I have uninstalled and reinstalled different version of JRE multiple times in every conceivable order, but I have not been able to fix the problem.
Hopefully my account can shed some light on solving this elusive bug. PM me if you would like the URL and a test account to my gallery.

Update: The JPEG corruption and Magic Number problems go away when I bybass the PHP upload, which seems to be corrupting the data somehow. This is discussed in another topic (the one you referred me to, I think).
