login stopped working!!

I installed Gallery yesterday...linux server running apache, php etc.
No problems at all. Trotted through the configuration options, pointed it to netpbm etc. I even loaded up some images last night, created a second user and tested it out with picture uploading. Today I logged on to change some caption bars and colours. A wee while later logins have stopped working!!

I still get the login popup window but when I try to login with either username/password it just returns me to the standard window. I have deleted all cookies. I have reinstalled the gallery system in paralel with yesterdays system and have created a new album directory but nothing seems to be helping.

Please. Am I being stupid? What could be stopping the login?

Is debug mode on in config.php?

It is now... the login window stays up but the main page is returned as normal with no errors. I have just been told that the second account managed to succeed a short while ago after a number of failed login attempts. So, no errors being reported, but I'm still failing to login?

What's the URL to your Gallery?
Do you have cookies enabled in your web browser?
Try the session test diagnostic (from the config wizard). Does it work?
