Deny access to a directory

I was looking to deny access to a directory on my server.

I.E

BTandF.com/Images

I want to be able to pull up the images, but I don't want anyone to type in the link and get at my files. It gives a more crisp looking site as well.

I thought I took care of it once through CHMODing but I may have been wrong. So I tried .htaccess but that didn't give me the results I wanted as well.

How do I go about this?
