Picture Comments

I currenlty have 2000 photo's on staic web pages, for which i have had to manually add the comments to the html files myself. What i would like to do is takes these photo's and move them to the gallery program as it is ammazing. However i would prefer not to have to add the comments in again. If anyone knows where the picture comments are keeped then i could probably write a script to add them. Or preferably is there any way that the comments can be taken from the EXIF data field instead?
