This is a known bug: you need to download one of the "bleeding edge" builds.

If the 1.04b OS X build doesn't work, can I suggest it's removed from the download page?

It does work. There is a known bug that affects a small number of people.

A new full installer build will come soon, probably this week. In the meantime, people affected by this bug should use the beta patches.

I had the same problem under Win98, Java 1.3

Tried the latest beta (1.11 I think) and no luck.

Went to java.sun.com and downloaded the 1.4.1 version of java, re-installed the original 1.0 preview, and low and behold, it works now.

I think it's a Java 1.3 vs. 1.4 thing.

Same problem, on Mandrake Linux 8.2. Switching to Sun's Java 1.4.1_01 did the trick for me, too. Although I've heard enough complaints about bugs in Java 1.4.1_01 to make me not set it up as my default JVM. Java 1.4.0 might be a better choice for those who want to play it safe.
