I've installed Gallery 1.4.3 from the tar, via an SSH shell. PHP is otherwise working (I can load the Gallery Diagnostics Page just fine) but when I try to load setup/index.php to configure my installation I get a "Cannot find server" - "This page cannot be displayed" error page (that's in IE 6.0 on WinXP; when I try to load it in Mozilla 1.6 the page doesn't come up at all, but the browser appears to reload whatever page I'm already looking at).
I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I haven't been able to find an answer elsewhere in the forums, the FAQ, or via Google. I've set up three or four other Gallery installations in the past and have not had this problem, so I'm really stumped here. Can anyone help? Version details follow below.

After finding this thread I tried commenting out the line "$locale_check=check_locale();" in setup/config_data.inc and this seems to have resolved the problem. That's the only change I made. I hope this will help the developers or other users avoid this issue!

I get the same "Cannot find server" message when I try check_netpbm.php or check_imagemagick.php. The other diagnostics pages load fine, but I'm unable to verify the installation of these tools. Why is this happening!?

I'm bumping this because I still haven't had any luck. I've now got a 1.4.3 installation on one domain and a 1.4.2 installation on another and both are exhibiting this problem: diagnostics.php loads, phpinfo.php gives what looks like a good report but I can't get the configuration wizard to load without editing config_data.inc, and after I do that I run into various problems with NetPBM and ImageMagick which prevent me from using Gallery . Please help!

Anything in your apache error_logs?

No, and the request for setup/index.php doesn't even show up in the access logs, although subsequent requests for setup/diagnostics.php do.

ok, then I have no idea sorry. Must be something weird in that php install, that I don't get.

I just tried starting over with v1.4.3-pl1, and it seems to have fixed all of the problems I've mentioned.

My problem is exactly the same. I can't setup Gallery after uploading and chmod'ing the files/directories. I get very odd behavior when pointing my browser to /gallery/setup/index.php - the browser doesn't load a page and gives me a server error in Safari:
