Greetings, I'm trying to help an uncle create a digital archive of his 50+ years of slides. Some friends who are helping me think about it and I had considered programming something, but Gallery looks like the answer. We have an informal project plan up here: (NOTE that if we can find the software to use, we don't want to code something ourselves--despite all that verbiage about us coding it.) We're planning to buy a Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 since it seems to be the only one with a bulk loader and having someone in a shop scan them all would cost many thousands of dollars more. We're debating storing jpegs at about 750 KB each or tiffs which would be somewhat bigger. We end up with 20-100 GB of images. (about 20,000 slides). I don't want to ask too many dumb questions. Is Gallery the answer to our archiving, retrieval, and distribution (to family) needs? I read the post above about performance and the number of images from the soccer season. Our db will have a lot of images, but not very many users. I'll keep reading the FAQ and documentation. I'm an rtfm believer. If anyone has any additional comments or advice about just getting the original images created and stored in a file system, that would be great, too. Thanks, Ed Matthews |

IMHO, Gallery is a GREAT TOOL (Thank Bharat and Co.!) for displaying your images REAL QUICKLY. I searched high and low for something that would allow me to:
1. Put my high-quality images up in a matter of minutes, post-processing and
2. Put digital snaps of family that is accessed after a bit of trouble- logging in.
Having said that, I am not sure if you are thinking of using it as an ARCHIVE tool! I too have about 15,k slides waiting to be scanned. For these, you are better off scanning at the highest resolution, and buring DVDs, (not even CDRs!). If you need more tips on that, look me up. On other place that I'd recommend is http://www.photo.net.
All the very best.
