Photo Capture Date from File

Is there a way or hack for Gallery to read the photo's capture date from the photo itself? All my photos come right from my digital cameras which has embedded the date and time into the file. I used to use jAlbum which read the file and outputted all the information on the page. I'm not concerned with the rest of the stuff so much as the capture date, it's a pain to set the capture date and time on so many photos manually.

Okay, I figured out the EXIF info with Jhead. But I'm still wanting a way for it to display just the date from the EXIF data, mostly so I can sort stuff by this date in the albums.

so easy... jhead -ft /home/user/g2data/*/**

took me forever to find this, but works great.
