Gallery looks nice, how does it compare to other apps, like coppermine, etc. ? |

depends on your needs.
gallery was created long before coppermine. the main difference between the two is gallery's superb look & GUI and that gallery is not database driven.
today, you get a php/mysql hosting plan for much less than a few years ago and db driven apps scale much better in general.
so coppermine may be more modern than gallery 1.4. But still, probably gallery 1.4 fits better your needs.
The gallery dev team is working on the successor of gallery 1.x for over a year now. And G2 blows everything away that's for sure
