I installed gallery 1.4.3-pl2 from a Gentoo ebuild and am VERY pleased with the way things have gone. After starting the installation this morning I now have the image galleries set up and am ready to start tinkering with customizing the look and feel of things. Very positive surprise.
I recommend gentoo and gallery to anyone who is interested in setting up a new photo gallery on the web. It really was quite easy. A few points that may be of interest to someone:
After emerging apache2 and php you still need to tell apache that php is in fact something to use. This is done via editing the apache2.conf-file and adding the line
Quote:
LoadModule php4_module extramodules/libphp4.so
with "extramodules" replaced with the location of your particular libphp4.so location. This may be enough, but just in case you want to edit the commonapache2.comf as well. Add the lines
Quote:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .phtml
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
and you should be set. After this you only need to emerge gallery and go to the gallery dir and follow the gallery installation instructions.
Expected time from start to finish: 3-8 hours, very much depending on your machine and whether or not you build from source or use ready packages.

Mind you, Gentoo is NOT the easiest Linux around. It would be preferable if you know a bit about fdisk, partitions, even kernel compiling. You can set it up from ready packages, too, but you still need to understand partitioning etc.
After you have Gentoo installed, though, it gets easy. This is why I chose Gentoo as my platform. Administration is VERY easy.
For those of you that like something a little easier, though, I don't recommend Gentoo.

3-8 hrs?!?!?! yikes... can you stop halfway through and pick up where you left off?
And i'm a bit unclear... I'm installing this on my SERVER, right? So, if my computer is REALLY slow and my mom's is fast, it's okay to use hers just for the installing?... i hope?!?!
Advice much appreciated! cheers...

Gentoo Linux is another operating system, I don't think your mom would be happy to find that you have installed Linux onto her poor little windows computer. In fact, I rather think she might pull down your pants and spank you with a leather belt... at least, if I were your mom that is what I would do
