 heh heh, any idea on when the first release of this version will be? I'm really excited about the prospect of more customizability and mySQL support!!
I try to do a little work on it every night. The more that people help out in the forums and answer questions, the more time I get to work on the code.
Currently, I've got the engine just about where I want it. We've got support for MySQL at the moment, with Oracle and PostgreSQL on the way. The engine appears to be totally stable. It's not complete, but it's getting there. Right now it has support for Albums and Photos, with plenty of room to grow to support all kinds of file types.
The real fun has begun on the front end. I'm using Smarty as the template engine to provide a nice templating interface. With the latest code in CVS you can create a random tree of photos and then navigate around it in a rudimentary fashion. At the moment I'm mainly focussing on creating the application framework with a strong module API so that I can make all of the non-core features (comments, ratings, photo printing, etc) into modules that we can add onto the system as you need them. This will enable other developers to start writing cool modules.
Finally, I'm working on the layout API. I've got this at a state where I'm pretty happy with it. You can choose a pre-programmed layout for your album (eg, "row/column grid" or "one big image surrounded by thumbnails" or "horizontal line of photos shaped like a roll of film") or you can design your own layout in PHP. We'll have a layout library so that developers can create and share new layouts.
And last but not least, I'm working on the Internationalization/Localization framework.
Once I've got the framework for all of these squared away, we'll start having a real application that folks can play with. Stay tuned,

Will there be plans for integration with postNuke, phpBB or any of the others?
Particularly - will gallery be able to support a common unified database between for integration (shared user db, layout and design) or will a seperate database be required?
Thanks for all your hard work... when it's anywhere near alpha I'll be happy to assist with bugtesting - and if my bosses don't find out, a development host!
