If I have absoulutely no php or programing experience, but am very fluent in computer and software operations, is this something I should take on or should I stick to regular html until i learn php?
You need little or no HTML or PHP knowledge to run Gallery. As the project vision says, "It must be so easy and self-explanatory to install that a bored, computer-fearing housewife in Ohio can set it up on her ftp-only ISP's webserver without having to ask us for help".
(As for PHP, if you know C, Java, or Perl, you'll instantly feel at home with PHP, which draws extensively from these... Nonetheless, even without programming experience, you can get yourself writing PHP-generated web pages in 20 minutes or so, and there is a surfeit of tutorials available online).

I also have a great deal of experience in loading operationg systems and run a medium sized web site. I do not have any experience in PHP (just getting started). If the above is your project vision, you failed.
The readme files are written for someone who has experience, and certainly not for a "computer-fearing housewife in Ohio". "Write an "empty-file" "PUT empty-file config.php" and some of the other commands in the readme file (installing using ftp) are not clear at all.
I got burried and quite......too many hours invested already......too bad, from what I have seem it looks just like what I needed and well done when installed.

Yeah that vision statement is a goal for G2. Sadly, G1 is still pretty far from achieving it and is designed in such a way that it's really not worth the development effort to get it there. G2 will be *far* easier to install.

Guys, I have very little coding experience and by following the instructions exactly as stated, I had mine up and running in less than an hour. Only after I went in to customize the site did I run into a snag here or there, but that is all part of the learning experience.
Personally I think Gallery was extremely intuitive and easy to install! Kudos!!
I especially like the warnings that still beg you to continue on, saying 'life is short'. My sentiments exactly. Great job!

It took me a couple days to get Gallery up and running, mainly because I had no experience doing anything with my website beyond creating static HTML pages and FTP'ing them up to the server. FWIW, I'm an OSX user who rents space on a virtual server running Red Hat.
A good part of that time was exchanging email with the support guy at my web host to make sure PHP was available and to get him to take my site out of Safe Mode. The rest was digging through the FAQ's and searching this board to find out how to make the customizations I wanted (ie making Gallery look like the rest of my site).
I had mysterious problems using the Add function with some of my existing directories and Gallery Remote is a bit of a mixed bag, but with persistance I got the job done. I would agree that Gallery isn't ready for mom-n-pop to try but it could be with just a bit more polish. I'm rather proud that I managed without asking for help here at all!
So, thanks to the Gallery team for all their hard work. My 1300-odd pictures in 50-odd galleries look great, all thanks to y'all.
