I'm trying to set up Gallery 1.4.4 on a Windows Apahce server, and it start to complain about not finding .htaccess, and according to the help files I'm supposed to add all the text it outputs to the end of my httpd.conf file - but this doesn't fix anything.
This only results in my httpd.conf having a shitload of lines that seems useless...
Any clues?

HellBoy, Gallery should work fine without those changes. The only thing you gain by enabling it is mod_rewrite really.
As for how to configure Apache -> http://docs.apache.org

Well, it won't save anything to config.php as it remains on 0kb.
When I'm done running the setup, it requires me to head back and create a .htaccess file.

I managed to put the outputted data from the wizard into my config.php, but I still have one problem - I'm unable to log in, as it didn't save any userdata.
How can I manually set a password for admin?

You can't. You need to make the config do it's thing. Did you create a .htaccess file?
