.ht access file help

The only error I get in the configuration on step 4 is:

"Error: File .htaccess is not writable by the webserver - chmod it 777 before proceeding."

I made the .htaccess file earlier and uploaded it or I thought I did but I cant find it...when I try to upload it again it skips it and in the error log it says:

"STATUS:> An identical file already exists on the remote site.
ERROR:> User has skipped file transfer."

I need to change it to chmod 777, and it says its on the server, so where in the world is it?
