I would start at putting gallery into debug mode, either buffered or immediate and then copy/paste the error message. You could also tell us what image manipulation program you used, which image manipulation modules you activated, the order they should be used and anything else you think might be remotly useful.
You might also try reading the FAQ that is sticky at the top of the forum to see if anything sounds familiar or if you need help getting it into debug mode.

there seem to be some problems with the applet now, as reported in another thread.. alexus, please file a bug on sourceforge, thanks.

I solved this by changing
upload_max_filesize = 8M
in php.ini
