Imagemagick/NetPBM Binaries Problem - No Thumbnails

I installed the latest nightly build. Everything went fine except NetPBM, Imagemagick, and FFMPEG. NetPBM said it installed ok. However, it still doesn't allow me to use thumbnails.

I checked with my web host 1&1 about imagemagick and they informed me that they won't allow it on my server and I have to use NetPBM. I want to get NetPBM working. I also want to know why they won't allow imagemagick and if I can get around that.

Can you help me to at least get NetPBM working. My settings are:
the "/usr/bin/" directory.
pnmtojpeg converter.
quality = 75
don't know where the jhead directory would be?

Here is the output I get when I try to test setting for NetPBM:

NetPBM binary test results

Here is what the debugger puts out (I don't know how much to post, oh well):

so.... what exactly is the problem? aren't you able to activate the netpbm module, just without support for bmp files? you can ask your webhost about that missing binary if you want bmp support.

Edit: from looking at your site i'm guessing you did activate the module but you get the broken-image for thumbnails? what you really need to post is debug output from when it tried to create a thumbnail. (The Executing: ... part and not the whole thing, please)

Alright, I see what you mean. I uploaded an image and had it create a thumbnail and I get that broken thumbnail image. Here is the output I got:

UPDATE: I noticed that thumbnails are showing for gif images, but not jpegs. If that means anything?

um... you noticed that worked, right?

Edit: so post the debug output for jpeg instead of gif!

UPDATE: I switched around the priority of the toolkits and that seemed to fix the problem. Gp can't create thumbnails for anything except gifs.

I'm still curious if there is any reason for me to need imagemagick? Is it faster or something? Why would I want both imagemagick and netpbm?

Can anyone point me to help for using ffmpeg since my webhost 1&1 won't answer me? How do I install it on a shared server? Is it already there?

It's not on there and you can't really install properly, since they won't allow you to call files that are needed. I installed Ffmpeg, and it worked enough to extract a thumb from the first frame, if I try to extract from subsequent frames it fails.

The problem didn't seem to go away entirely. I still get about 1/4 of the jpegs that I upload don't load thumbnails and I get the broken image.

What could be causing this? Any help? Why only some of the pictures?

I've tried using different upload methods and they apprear to all create some pictures with no thumbs.

Hi..

I also have this problem (see www.us.remarked.net) which is the gallery I'm trying to build.

I have Gd and NetPBM inbstalled, with NetPBm as the priority tool kit. I also host with 1 & 1and have the same problem with imagemagick not working (though until I read this post I thought it was me as they never told me they would not allow it).

Allow the files I upload are (to the best of my knowlegde) jepg's and I also get broken image thumbnails.

Help always appreciated.

Cheers..

chipallen2, you haven't yet posted debug output for a jpg that is failing!

enable buffered debug output in config.php, then look for the "Executing:".. portion of the debug output.. similar to what chipallen2 posted above.

it's in your gallery2 install directory.. if you have shell access, use any text editor.. otherwise ftp download the file, edit, and reupload.

i just called godaddy. they said they disable some things because i'm on a shared account (multiple websites on one server) inorder to prevent problems from occuring.

at first they said they never heard of fork! and they're supposed to be the experts. anyway is there any option for me? if there's no work around with G2, would G1 require fork?

thanks,
keith

The only image toolkit that doesn't use fork() is the GD graphics toolkit. I haven't read the whole thread, but if GD is available, try using it and see if that helps.

bharat,

thank you, that is working... at least partly. now when i try to either import from G1 or select several photos at a time from the server to import, G2 adds 2 of them and then craps out. i tried to run with immediate debug mode, but nothing came up. any thoughts on what i'm doing wrong now? the thumbnail generation is working fine on the photos that do get in.

thanks,
keith

thanks gang,
keith

Im on GoDaddy and am experiencing the same problem.
So you were able to get GD to work with Gallery? How do you get Gallery to use GD instead of ImageMagic or NetPBM?

chaos421, looks like your webhost can't handle the load:

sh: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable

They are either overloaded or preventing you from executing other processes. Either way, this prevents G2 from operating properly... :-(

what about browsing the forums and using the search function? ;)
here you go:
http://gallery.menalto.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=25979

it's not finished, far from it. but there will be a mambo integration.

I assume that you are using the free package that's provided by 1&1. That package does not include FFMPEG or any other library that might stress the server's cpu. The scripting capabilities are limited as well and I'm sure there are restrictions to php and sql. However that has indirect relationship to your problem. What I suggest you do

1. Try using one of the other 3 graphic libraries that come with G2
2. Try to figure out the exact path where those binaries are stored (it might not be /usr/bin/, it depends on the OS and your host's preference)
3. Ask around on Forums and try IRC to find other 1&1 Users. There should be a lot of them. They became pretty infamous with the package that they offered at one time and I'm sure someone is using the host to run some kind of an image gallery so they might tell you the proper settings.

I realize this is an old thread, but I ran across it when I was looking for install help on FFMPEG on a 1&1 server. I have imagemagick running on my 1&1 server, for insructions, see the post in my blog here: http://www.indemnity83.com/?p=134
