I've done nothing wrong here, guys.
On the matter of .htaccess though:
the wizard DOES prompt you to create this file:
<<f you are using Apache, create a file named .htaccess in the main Gallery directory with the following content:
php_value memory_limit 16M

If I do that, it gives me problems: every URL 'click' wants to save the page to my hard drive.
but presumably, you need to have it there?

the .htaccess file is purely optional. if you get this problems with urls when you have a .htaccess, it indicates that your server doesn't support .htaccess files, whatever. delete the .htaccess file.
please talk to your webmaster, all problems are related to his service, to the server setup. please try to do a little bit more on your own , there's your webmaster and google...
