Best way to learn gallery 2 internals ?

I am new to Gallery, and really like what i discover. I am an experienced programmer (but have quite a bit to learn in PHP), and would like to "customize" gallery to suit my own needs. What would you recommend as steps to learn Gallery so that I would be able to do what I want with it ?

Gallery URL (optional): Not public yet, just testing internally on Fedora Core 3
Gallery version: 2 alpha 4.0 ++
Webserver (with version): Apache 2.0.52
Datatabase (with version): postgreSQL 7.4.2, Pervasive Postgres 8.0 rc3 (Gallery not tested on it, yet)
PHP version (eg 4.2.1): 4.3.10
phpinfo URL (optional):
Graphics Toolkit(s): Imagemagick
Operating system: redhat linux fedora Core 3
Web browser/version: Mozilla Firefox
