Remove space between thumbs & create as square (ver 1.5)

Please accept my apologies if this is a duplicate post.. Having some trouble with posting this evening.

I am trying to do two things:

1) I want to bunch all thumbs together, with no more than 1px padding between cells - I cannot find where to make this mod.

2) I want to set Gallery to upload/create thumbs as square without having to crop each photo (I've tried the various suggestions by richbl, etc.. and not having luck, as I'm on ver 1.5).

Any suggestions?
