Removing the data directory

I'm trying to install Gallery 2 beta 2, but then I got some errors. I emptied the database and uploaded the gallery files again (to make sure everything was there).
But under the installation I got error messages saying that the files in the data directory was there already. When I tried to delete the files it says that I don't have permission. I can only access the server via FTP.

How can I remove the files?

I also have an Gallery 1 which I would want to remove later. I've tried to delete the albums directory there on another gallery but I didn't have permission there either...
