When you don't fill in a caption, the file name is what is used as the caption. So you have two choices: 1) use the caption editor to remove them or 2) remove the code that displays captions.

check out view_photo.php and view_albums.php, then take a look at the /layout/ dir. I think one of the files with "inline" in their name is what contains the caption. Maybe something with the word "caption" in it, but i'm not sure.
