10'000 photos isn't that large. and it depends on how they are organized. G1 may have bigger problems with a single album having 1000 items.
G2 can handle huge galleries and should scale very well.

I guess my main concern is that there will be about 800+ albums... I'm wondering if that will slow down load times, especially since non of them are nested albums. Also, do you know if anyone has come up with a hack for listing albums through a clickable links in a sort of index list, rather than thumbnails?

G2 has the albumselect module which generates this list of albums.
I'd recommend G2 anyway. If you use G1, you can test the performance yourself. it also depends heavily on the server setup / hardware.
