I have more or less the same troubles with my gallery2 embeded in Mambo. Language is German. No problems with online Mambo content, but when G2 content shows up on the page (enter gallery in the mainmenu) umlauts shows as "?". (Gästebuch on the right side > G?stebuch).

No idea.

ch1291, what about G2 standalone, do you have the problems there too?
If not, you have to change the charset in the mambo page header to utf-8.

Looks like a problem i have to check in the Mambo forums.

G2 standalone > no problem
G2 content (comments...) in Mambo > no problem
Mambo content > no problem
Mambo content when also G2 content is on the page > PROBLEM

ch1291, as i said, it's the charset.
mambo sets it to:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

g2 sets it to (and requires):
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"/>
