.htaccess default file

in my trying to fix my previous problem i deleted the .htaccess file that was part of Gallery's default install. can i steal one from another Gallery installation and copy it over? |

If you mean the one inside the gallery directory, just re-run the Configuration Wizard, and it'll re-build the .htaccess file from scratch.
