hi,
i've been using gallery 1. for a year or two on 3 or 4 different sites all hosted by different hosts, & i've been very pleased & impressed with it.

recently, tho, at least 2 of the web hosts have, altered/updated their php software/settings & it is seemingly impossible to liaise with them (even tho they are willing) to get the gallery software working properly again. to be honest, its becoming an enormous waste of time.

i'm wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences. i dont know much about php & scripting etc, but the impression i'm getting is that any software such as gallery that is so critically dependent on the installation settings of the web host's server software, is doomed from the start.

or am i being too simplistic, am i missing something?

thanks
chris

Hello Chris,

Gallery 1.1 1.2 1.3 and even 1.4 are kinda ouf date.
Because how should they know that the ImageMagick people changes Paramater ?

Same with PHP5 compliance ...

So if you use a recent Version of Gallery, then you are not out of Date.

Its just like using Windows95 on a Dual Opteron Board with SATA Raid.

Regards,

Jens

Gallery 1.5 needs at least 4.1.0 ;)
4.3.x prefered.

well i just installed gallery1.5, on php4.3.1.1, & no serious problems reported in config wizard, but when i tried to upload pix i get the same old "unable to make thumbnail(0)" error that i've been getting for weeks now on two totally separate installations on two totally separarte web servers run by two totally separate hosting companies- bothof which gallery installations used to work fine.

maybe this software is ok if you run it on a dedicated server, but if its on a shared server i suspect you gotta be really lucky as to how the webhosts have installed/setup php- either that or there's something wrong with the software.. i've been emailing/phoning back & forth to 2 different webhosts for several weeks, & no matter what they or i do all we ever get is "unable to make thumbnail(0)" errors.

what to do now i have no idea, other than look at other softwares.

FAQ Gallery:c.31

Enable debug mode, and then retry your upload. You should have a lot more output, including the error which occurs when trying to run your graphics package.

krasskross,

yes, please look at other software.

Because if you would like to drive a car, it needs tires.
But if you only have tires that fits for a bike you cant use your car.

yeah well, puncture after puncture tends to get you down, jens!

anyhow i re-downloaded the netpbm files from this site & re-uploaded them to my site (which is the third time that's been done in the last few weeks -once by me & once by the webhost) and the gallery software seems to be working ok now.

just the other site to sort out now

thankyou for your respones & sorry for getting a bit irritated

chris
