2-column and refresh

I have a couple of quick questions, if you could please help?
The gallery in question is at http://servelle.com/digital/ (under construction), version 1.4.4-pl6.

1. I'm trying to figure out how to get a 2-column album layout style to work for me. What I'd really like is this (below), but I'm ging with whatever I can find at the moment. The trouble is, none of the mods I'm finding(including the one in the mods help section) are working - all are giving me php errors. Is there one for gallery v1.4.4-pl6 that we know works?
Sample desired layout:

<tr>
<td>
Image Thumb<br>
Here
</td>
<td valign="top">
<b>Image Caption Here</b><br>
Image description might go here, if that's possible. Is probably somewhat lengthy, though not necessarily.<br>
<center>[ 1024 x 768 ] (or whatever the size happens to be)</center>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
(Well, okay, html doesn't work in the forum apparently, but you get the idea - it's basically the same layout as the top albums have, without the accent under the title.)

2. I've changed my layout in configuration to reflect the changes I'd like to make eventually. In configuration mode, it tells me that Gallery is displaying 1 item per row and 5 rows per page. However, in the actual gallery, it's still at the default 3x3. How can I get this to apply?

I don't know much at all about php, so have been hesitant to break things when I don't know how to fix them, but any sort of guidance(or links to working tutes! I looked around, but may have missed one.) would be much appreciated.

1. I don't understand. Photos (mock ups) or URLs would be helpfull. 2 column mod perhaps.
