Is there a module to display my own code in a block?

Hello,
I was just wondering if there is a module or something that would let me have a block on the left side of the screen that would display my own html/php code.
Preferably the block, & the info contained inside the block would not get copied over if I need to do a gallery upgrade.

The reason I ask is I would like to have a few links and a list of birthdays displayed.

You might want to take a look at the Static HTML module here, http://codex.gallery2.org/index.php/Gallery2:UserContributions#Modules

You might possibly be able to code your own HTML and include that in your sidebar.tpl

Be sure to follow the guidlines for customizing themes and create a 'local' directory in your 'templates' directory.
