Gallery 1.5 and phpBB2 question about user db

I've been able to embed gallery in phpbb2 using the instructions in the /contrib/phpbb2 folder. I'm wondering if it's possible to make gallery 1.x to use the phpbb2 user database while gallery is running standalone. In other words I don't want to load gallery through modules.php and embed it in phpbb2, I just want a standalone gallery that uses the phpbb2 user list.

I have also looked at the mod on snailsource and it seems to involve embedding. I couldn't find any other information in the forums so I appreciate any advice.
