Start-up help

Ok, I'm sure there are lots of people asking the same questions but I could do with a few pointers. I would like to start using the gallery program because I think it is great. But, I don't know where to start, what is PHP and Apeche! I have read the site installation facts but still unsure.

Please could someone give a few pointers.
