Hello,
I am a fairly new to the world of web development. So please forgive me if I ask a stupid question or two. I am very interested in installing Gallery 1.3.1 on my website. However I have run into a problem. My web host (www.ReadyHosting.com) uses a Win2000 IIS5 setup. My question is; Is it at all possible to install Gallery on my website with a Win2000 IIS5 back end. I have read on this website that IIS5 is not supported, but I just wanted to make sure that is the current situation before I look for other PHP solutions.
Thank you for any and all help.

As web server IIS, the answer is NO.

If you are insterested of finding new host, consider http://www.needname.com $19.95 /monthly for 500Mb. Contact

, they will make sure that your gallery will work. Security is NeedName.Com top priority.

That’s unfortunate for me  as I am locked into a contract with my web host for about another year. I've already paid, so if I left now I would be throwing that money away. This means I'll have to find another PHP solution.

I hope this is not inappropriate to ask here but, could someone recommend some other PHP product that works with IIS5 and is similar to the look feel and function of 1.3.1 Gallery. Or perhaps some other PHP solution that if you were in my place you would use.

Thank you very much.

Gallery will work with IIS5 -- it's just that we don't have the cycles to test it so we won't support it. There's a section on it in the User Guide, try it out.

According to bharat, IIS 5.0 supposed to work for gallery.

But I have no idea to install php on IIS web server. Though I will keep on searching and interested to try this out too.
Keep in touch.

I placed a call to a tech support guy from the company who hosts my website. He informed that PHP was installed on their servers. I installed gallery and ran the configuration wizard from the prompt on index.php. NOTE:I was not able to run the configure.bat file before clicking on the configuration wizard. As far as I can tell I'll have to ask the sys admin over at my web host to execute the configure.bat file for me. As I can not execute files on their servers from my computer over a FTP connection. But after clicking on the configuration wizard I saw that indeed PHP v4.0.6 was installed. So it must be possible, but I can't tell you how it was done.

I have a question, is NETPBM essential for Gallery to work properly? And if it is, Can I install NETPBM myself on my web hosts server. Or do I have to ask them to install NETPBM for me?

Regarding having the webhost run configure.bat/secure.bat for you, see the section named: 3. HOW DO I INSTALL GALLERY IF I HAVE ONLY FTP ACCESS? in your readme file (included in the gallery package)

You do need the netpbm files on your server, if not the Gallery won't be able to processANY images at all. The Gallry relies on the binaries from that package to be able to do anything with the images you want to display.

But, you do NOT need to have the webhosting company installing them. Download the correct binaries, upload them to a directory of your choice (e.g NetPBM) and simply point the configuration settings, using the config wizard to the appropriate path. More info in <!-- BBCode Start --><A HREF="http://gallery.menalto.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=GalleryDocs&file=index&page=gallery1-install.faq.b.php" TARGET="_blank">FAQ B - How do I install NetPBM using ftp?</A><!-- BBCode End -->

As another note, you should check which PHP parameters are set on your webhosts server.

I would also advice you to read through the FAQ, since most of the questions asked in this forum, relates to something already covered there.

(Edited due to some typos....

Thank you very much for all the information being provided here. You all have been so very helpful. I have read through the FAQ and I am trying to find the answers to my questions though the designated help sections here before I resort to asking for help on the forum. But as a layman I'm having some trouble understanding what the documentation is telling me to due. Certain parts I have found to be confusing and unclear (To me). For instance, What are binaries? I don't see anything in the NetPBM download section clearly marked as binaries. I am making progress still, and that is largely due to the generous help being provided in this forum.

Thanks to all of you who have offered advice here.
Thank you very much!

Download this netpbm for windows environment...
http://telia.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/gallery/netpbm1.1-gallery1.0-win32.tgz
Extract this to your temp directory and upload all (including *dll) to your web hosting provider.

Make sure that you are pointing to the right path of your netpbm on your setup.

Let me if this work.
Regards,
TheWatcher.

Hello again,
I am having some trouble still, I have gallery and NetPBM physically installed on my website. Because I can not change the permissions on files and directories in my website, I have to call up one of their tech support people and ask them to do it for me every time. So today I called up and had them change
The net PBM dir and all of its contents to 755
The file .htaccess to 777
The file config.php to 777
And the directory setup to 755.

The tech support guy said he did as I asked. I apparently cannot check to make sure the permissions are correct myself, as they don't seem to change in my ftp client. The tech support guy assures me that they are indeed changed, even thought I can't see it. So I hung up the phone and went to configure Gallery, I launched and completed the Configuration Wizard, and after clicking the save settings button I get these errors:

Warning: MkDir failed (Permission denied) in d:htmlusersarchEnemiesnethtmlcontentmultimediagalleryclassesgalleryUserDB.php on line 35
Error: Unable to create dir: d:/html/users/archEnemiesnet/html/content/multimedia/gallery/albums/.users
Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in d:htmlusersarchEnemiesnethtmlcontentmultimediagalleryclassesgalleryUserDB.php on line 99

Can I fix this? And if so what do I need to do?
Or is this unfixable due to my web host?

Hello again,
d:/html/users/archEnemiesnet/html/content/multimedia/gallery/albums/.users

Make sure this is the right path of your albums.

If you have FTP client, you can check permission setting.

As far as I can tell that path is correct. I am able to view it in my broswer.
I don't know why, but when I look at any file or folder on my website it always comes up as full permissions for everything. Even on the files they have supposedly altered for me. I was told this is a windows/ftp issue. Frankly I really have no idea.

May I ask, are you setting up gallery for personal use or business. I hope you don't mind me asking.

I will try this tonight. I will install Windows 2000 server and php. I will keep you posted.
I have to complete some webserver for other business.

I don't mind you asking, this is for my personal website. Not business related at all.

That's very kind of you to help me trouble shoot on your own time. Thank You.

Perhaps this will help identify my problem. As you saw in the post I made here the last error stated that it was unable to create a directory named '.users'. So I made one manually. I was able to complete the configuration wizard this time, and I got to a gallery photo display page, with a group of errors at the top of this page. here are those errors:

Warning: fopen("d:htmlusersarchEnemiesnethtmlcontentmultimediagalleryalbums.users.htaccess","w") - Permission denied in d:htmlusersarchEnemiesnethtmlcontentmultimediagalleryplatformfs_win32.php on line 48

Warning: Supplied argument is not a valid File-Handle resource in d:htmlusersarchEnemiesnethtmlcontentmultimediagalleryclassesgalleryUserDB.php on line 48

Warning: Supplied argument is not a valid File-Handle resource in d:htmlusersarchEnemiesnethtmlcontentmultimediagalleryclassesgalleryUserDB.php on line 49

Warning: fopen("d:htmlusersarchEnemiesnethtmlcontentmultimediagalleryalbumsalbumdb.dat.lock","a+") - Permission denied in d:htmlusersarchEnemiesnethtmlcontentmultimediagalleryplatformfs_win32.php on line 48
Error: Could not open lock file (d:/html/users/archEnemiesnet/html/content/multimedia/gallery/albums/albumdb.dat.lock)!

I hope that helps.
It looks to me like a permissions issue. But I'm only making an not-so-educated-guess at this point.

Unfortunately I cannot change the permissions by myself. I have to call my web host and have a technician do this for me. Last time I spoke with them I asked if they could give me the ability to change these permissions myself, and they said NO. They said I must call them and ask them to do it for me. In fact he also said it was "Against Their Policy to change permissions on files, but he would do me a favor". All of the technicians have likely gone home for the night, and probably the weekend  But I will try to get a hold of someone tomorrow to make those changes. However it would not surprise me if I have to wait until Monday

I use bulletproof FTP http://www.bpftp.com I've found it to be a good FTP client.

I did as you suggested, and gave the album directory 777 permissions. Doing so seems to have fixed any problems I was having with the configuration wizard and such. I have gotten to the point where I can make albums, edit my album preferences, and upload pictures. Unfortunately I've run into another problem. I cannot upload any pictures. When I try I get this error:

Processing status...
- Adding aestack[1].jpg jpegtopnm: Can't open d:htmlusersarchEnemiesnethtmlcontentmultimediagalleryalbumsalbum01aestack_1.jpg. Errno=No such file or directory(2). pnmfile: EOF / read error reading magic number
Error: Invalid image: aestack_1.jpg!

I tried giving my album directory, the album01 directory, 777 permissions. But that didn't fix the problem. Would you or anyone possibly know what is causing this error when I try to upload pictures?

Thank you
