For now at least. We are looking into ways of improving the forums, and site in general, and this is on the "known issues" list.

Will all improvements flow back into drupal? Im currently building a drupal site and am not happy about the default forum look and feel. The one you use here seems to be much better. Otherwise, is the source of this website open?

eventually... mindless posted some patches on drupal.org, so you could get them from there until the drupal devs decide to incorporate the changes in drupal.
