Retrieve Counts for each galleries..

Is there a method to easily grab the total count of images in each album? I'm making a PHPNuke module, but need to know how to get the info from gallery .. Just want a block in nuke to be able to display the total counts for each album .. so just need to get the counts from gallery .. anyone got any pointers?
