Upload Applet corrupts JPEGS

My site is running quite splendidly, except when I go to use the Upload Applet to add photos. It seems to corrupt all of the pictures added by it. All are JPEGs and all of them either get artifacting and/or strangely shifted colors. Uploading using the browser (the first option on the Add Items page) works fine. Has anyone else run into this? I can't seem to find if this is a known issue or not. The first few times I used the upload applet, it worked fine, but now it corrupts any pictures it uploads. I have also tried using it from another client (my laptop) and it has the same effect.
