I upgraded from Gallery 1 to 2.0.1 on my own server which is hosting my album and my friends' albums. I just got a hosting package with Dreamhost (with Gallery 2.0.1) and I'd like to move my one album and its sub-albums to the new gallery install there while keeping my friends' albums on the original server. I have a lot of pictures, so I'd like to preserve all captions, comments, etc.
How should I go about doing this? The forum posts I found didn't seem applicable. Thanks.

you can't copy just a selection of albums from one G2 to another. such tools don't yet exist.
maybe you can copy a selectio of G1 albums to the new host (the whole albums directory just without the subdirectories that you don't want). and then you could run the import tool on the new host.

i think the export/import module in user contrib (see http://codex.gallery2.org/) may help with moving album between G2s. you could also copy the G1 albums and remigrate on the new server (copy the albums dirs you want plus the top level albumdb.dat etc).

If your friends albums aren't a ton of images, you could simply do a migration of *all* data then simply delete everything you don't want. It has the advantage of being technically simple, assuming of course that your friends don't have gigs and gigs of data

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I think I'm going to go with copying my own albums and the albumdb.dat to Dreamhost and remigrate. Some of my photos are very large and before copying and migrating, I'd like to resize them. I know that albumdb.dat keeps the photo dimensions so I don't think I could just mogrify the jpgs in the album directories. Are there any suggestions on how to go about doing this? I'd prefer not to use up the bandwidth uploading full size photos to the new gallery install especially since I'm going to resize them in the end.

Have a look at http://www.beckettmw.com/testgallery/ - That should let you resize your G1 images before you migrate them.
