After finally sitting down to sort out the problems I've been having the fix was surprisingly simple. I kept getting errors from Album.php trying to allocate more than 8MB memory while it was rebuilding the random block cache. So I pushed the PHP process limit to 64MB and it's fixed now. Since then, I've made a few mods to add a feature (to exclude specific galleries) and ported some of the standard Gallery "block-random.php" code to the random block code from www.lanside.net.
