I see that in G1 an image location would be gallery/albumname/image.jpg but in G2 its a whole long address of stuff. I have a foruma nd over the years I've linked to thousands of images in my gallery. Since all thsoe links will now become red xs is there a way to fix that? I think G2 should hae taken that into account.

no, not the same.

hotlinked images still work. we redirect the requests, the end user will be shown the correct page for page requests and the correct image for image requests.

Actually I just realized that everything will still work. When I post an image in a forum, I always use the absolute path (ie: albums/image01.jpg) and since I didn't change the location of my albums dir all my images that I posted are still good! Excellent.

by the way, to anyone out there who had the same question. if you want to migrate your albums into G2 and delete your G1 albums when you're done, you should keep around your albums dir and put the .htaccess file in there that will re-route requests to your G2 photos. it's the same .htaccess mod_rewrite script that is in your gallery folder.
