G1 -> G2-Migration has a problem if G1 is in DOCROOT?

I have an own virtual server for my gallery, therefore I wanted to have gallery in the DocumentRoot of the Webserver. Therefore, the URL for all my Pictures is "http://bilder.rince.de", and for (eg may day-to-day-album-) Pictures it is "http://bilder.rince.de/20050620".
The migration guide assumes that you have $DOCROOT/gallery for your installation. Okay, I tweaked a little bit and it worked. In general. I moved my gallery-page from $DOCROOT to $DOCROOT/g1, made the update (which went very find, thank you for that!).
But I can not use anymore the short path for the pictures - when I try to access eg http://bilder.rince.de/20050620 - this doesn't work. Also just using http://bilder.rince.de/gallery/20050620/ doesn't work too.
Is there a way go use gallery2 in the $DOCROOT of a webserver and use the short path to albums, or do I miss something there? Currently, I switched back to my old installation since I need that picture-pages, but there is no problem in trying again the migration.

yes, g2 can be used in the docroot with short urls.
the migration guide just examplifies a case where g1 is in gallery/ and not in the docroot.

what did you do, what are the problems that you faced?
