you mean the captcha image where you're asked to type the numbers/letters that are shown in an image?
if so, please add a link to your g2.

your phpinfo indicates that you don't have GD support.
captcha requires GD functions. and the captcha modules checks for the presence of these function when you try to activate it.
i have no idea how you managed to activate the captcha module on this server.
did you move this g2 from one server to another? or did the webhost change anything?
on this server, you can't use the captcha module. deactivate it in site admin -> modules.

Can I activate the GD support? I installed Gallery2 with Fantastico and that probably explains how it was activated. I did not move it from another server.

no, your php doesn't support GD. ask your webhost, only they can change / recompile php.
